HARLEM, New York, March 2, 2017 – The Rotary Club of Harlem hosted its second annual reading and book donation event in multiple local schools throughout the NYC community to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ “Read Across America” day.RCOH RAA 1

Members of the Harlem Rotary Club delivered nearly a thousand donated books to students of grades K-12, at four different NYC Schools. Younger students in seven different Second Grade and younger classes also spent time with Rotary members who read with them, discussed the impact and importance literacy has had in their lives, and forged positive connections with students.

The “Read Across America” event was held at Careers in Sport HS (Bronx), P.S. 206 (Manhattan), Sojourner Truth School (PS 149) (Manhattan), and Early LIFE Center (Manhattan.) Nearly 1200 students in grades K-12 are enrolled in these four schools.

Sojourner Truth School Literacy Coach Emily Simler shared, “Read alouds with someone new are always a treat for students!” There were definitely smiles all around!

Teacher Jennifer Elliott from Careers in Sports HS (Bronx) commented that “I am always trying to encourage kids to read, so having a variety of books really helps!” Many of the donated books were brand new.

The Harlem Rotary Club has a strong dedication to a mission to develop increased literacy in community schools. In this second annual event, emphasis was placed not only on interacting with learners and providing them with positive role-models, but also providing books as resources for the four participating schools.
